Kwesto is a ugandan (Lugaflow) Hipop artist based in Sweden. Ugamuziki talks to him in his first ever interveiw."I have been so positive to be doubtful".
Who or what is Kwesto? Kwesto is the brand name of Mahmood Kibuka Kiyingi, father of two, born and raised in Uganda and Sweden. Educated at nakivubo blue, kibuli Dem and Märsta gymnasium Product, Swedish resident, mbu the best outspoken Luga Flow emcee, Baboon Forest Vice president, rubbin shoulders with Grestness with No Limit GNL One of the members of Young Vibez, the first group of Ugandan rappers to throw words to bouncy hip-hop beats artistically using Luganda and English languages (i mean like painting a clear picture on white paper type of art........ if you know what i mean)
How and when did you start your music career? I started music at as early as 13 years by then i was so much a fan of Shabba ranks, Chaka demus and the pliers. It was about that time i moved to Sweden and was exposed to studio facilities. I used to hang around friends who were into writing and recording music as their hobby, my first rhymes was when i was playing around with my friends that was way back in the early 1995/6, I used to do my thing(the rapping) in English until one day i got a call from my old time friend Ibrahim Lwanga a.k.a. DLux (young vibez/KADDO who was then putting together a group called young vibez, he was looking for talent and was convinced i was one of them who got what he was looking for, At first I did not take him seriously when he asked me to write rap in Luganda, i found it so strange to flow as it was such a difficult language to poetize in a metrical form. It was then i realised the difference between speaking a language and compressing it to form a legendary piece of art, But naloo it managed to sink in deep and one day it just clicked from then i' ve never looked back.
You are known for promoting Lugaflow music what is lugaflow? ”LugaFlow" D'lux invented the word lugaflow,Luga is a combination of vanacular poetry and English language to those who don't know the meaning of lugaflow,Luga is a Swahili word meaning language and Flow is a word play with continual shifting smoothly on to the beat/instrumental. Luga doesn’t mean luganda as many are misguided. Luga is all native languages spoken all over Uganda. Its slowly picking up thanks to likes of GNL, Bataka e.t.c Lugaflow society is suffused with followers, in which everybody seems to mimic and recycle the same trend, formular and style but am carrying originality in the whole package and its very hard for many artist to attain at this stage of the game, they need more time to get to the bottom of it all. The contemporary industry is dominating the market for a few more years but not longer the new generation of youths is experimenting creativity when it comes to music wording, they ve' started to slowly moving away from the monotonous beat (kidandali) which gives us a chance to exhibit new menus for their ears.
How long have you been in the music industry and how have you found it? The music industry at the moment is growing at a great speed and more money is accumulated by those artists on top of their game, I believe its going to get a twist at some point that’s when real talent will emerge and this time on the international scene with our native languages. At the moment every one can sing but it’s gonna get harder to penetrate as in every soon record companies/publishing companies will be introduced
Do you have a stage name? And if so, why that particular name. Kwesto is my stage name as mentioned above, that’s the name the streets of Stockholm gave me.
Have you had any challenges in your music career?
In particular when were your most annoying moment and what happened? As in anything in life its inevitable to face challenges, in this case i 've worked in conditions where i have to travel long distances late at night for studio sessions in cold winters, sleep in studios and ending up loosing a whole entire album due to a computer crash after all my efforts. that’s the most annoying so far.
What success have you acquired from your music career? Success is when i’ve made at least three well received albums and a sold out concert which hasn’t been achieved yet, but as for personal growth as an artist i’ve gotten many open doors and now its my time to explore, there is so much to tell, but i can not let out all the goods. Let’s just say i’ve a few good things and projects in the workings.
What do you sing about and who composes/writes your songs? I sing about day to day happenings in my life and surroundings, injustice e.t.c Right now i compose all my songs, but in the beginning i worked closely with my mentor D’lux (ibraw of milestonez) to coordinate the language discipline in order to acquire diligence and affectivity. We do still go back to the drawing board every now and then depending on how serious the project is
Which studio do you produce your music from and who is your producer(s)? I've worked with different producers both Sweden and Kampala city, at the moment am working with trumotive iron African, Ken Ring, Napp black and Swangzave Benon.
What would you change about your past life before your music career or present life if you have the chance to? Nothing special, i have been so positive to be doubtful.
